Tips and home remedies for snoring

It is estimated that around 45% of adults snore, at least intermittently. What helps against snoring ?

Snoring is caused by fluttering movements of the tongue, palate, uvula, and throat. Often times, snoring can be traced back to being overweight or obese.

But colds, allergies, too much alcohol or tobacco before bed can also be responsible for this unpleasant noise.

Regardless of the causes, snoring is usually very annoying for both those affected and their partners.

Most snorers suffer from poor sleep quality because they wake up frequently. If the noises are very loud, you should definitely see a doctor as there could be a health problem.

Tips against snoring

  • Sleep on your side:  When you sleep on your back, your tongue and roof of your mouth fall back and block your airways, which is why you often snore in this position. If you can’t sleep on your side, tricks like putting a tennis ball on your pajama back can be very helpful. With the tennis ball lying on your back becomes uncomfortable, then you will sleep better on your side.
  • Use an extra pillow Try an extra pillow so that the head is slightly higher than the rest of the body and the airways remain free. Often you can prevent snoring at night in this way.
  • Losing weight:  If you are overweight or obese, you should try to lose weight. Not only can you prevent snoring, but you can also improve your quality of life.
  • Quitting smoking:  Smoking irritates the upper respiratory tract, which can also lead to heavy snoring. If you stop, you can not only solve this problem, but also improve your health and quality of life.
  • Avoid alcohol before going to bed Excessive consumption of alcohol up to 3 hours before bedtime causes the tongue, tonsils and roof of the mouth to relax and snoring can occur with every breath.
